Are you thinking about getting a dog? If the answer is yes, then you need to make sure that you know what you’re going to be in for. Some people think that owning a dog is all cuddles and play time, but this is not the case at all. In this article, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the things that you need to understand about owning a dog, so that you understand the reality. Keep reading down below if you would like to find out more.
Space
The first thing that you’re going to need to consider is space. Space is one of those things that you’re going to need enough of if you have a dog. The reason for this is that they need to be able to wander around, rather than being confined to one spot all the time. Not to mention all of the things that you’re going to need to purchase for them will need to go somewhere!
Ideally you need to have a garden or somewhere nearby in which they can run around. Dogs are not meant to be confined in the house all day, so you either need to be able to let them outside or know where you can take them for lovely long walks on a regular basis.
Budget
Next, ask yourself how much you have available in your budget for your new pet. Dogs are not cheap and even if you are rehoming one from the shelter you will still need money each month for their upkeep. Don’t forget your new pooch will need food, bowls, toys, a bed, insurance, and vet bills. This all adds up, so you need to ensure you have enough available to cover all these things. On top of that, you might even need to pay for dog training if you’re not massively successful doing this yourself.
Kids
You also need to think about kids if you’re going to be getting a dog. You need to strongly consider how you’re going to train the dog so that they know not to be rough or anything with the kids, and you also need to ensure that the kids aren’t hurting the dog. Of course, this wouldn’t be on purpose, but a pulled ear or tail is not fun! Think carefully about whether or not your kids are ready for a dog, and whether you think bringing a new dog into the home is a good idea based on your level of experience with training.
Time
Finally, a new dog in your home will take up a lot of your time. Do you have this time to offer, and will it bother you if you have to take time out to walk him or her? Every aspect of having a dog within your home takes time, including training and walking. If there is nobody home a lot of the day, then maybe it isn’t the right time to get a dog just yet. They are sociable creatures who love having company so ideally someone should be home for them. Make sure you are walking your dog two to three times a day as it isn’t fair for them to have to hold their pee for long periods.
