We all love to take a vacation and explore new places, but what about the local area? Sometimes we get so caught up in exploring new places that we forget to enjoy what is right under our noses. There are many activities you can do with your family, even if you only live 10 minutes away from your favorite attractions! In this post, I’m going to give you some ideas for things you can do in your own backyard.

1) Go for a walk in the park

There are many beautiful parks located near major cities. If you live in or around a city, I’m sure there is at least one park with great walking trails and plenty of nature to enjoy. Pack a picnic lunch and spend the day exploring your local park! If you don’t live near a big city, that’s okay too! There are probably several small parks near you with playgrounds, hiking trails, and more. Get outside and explore!

2) Go on a nature walk

There are many great walking trails located near cities. If you live in or around a city, I’m sure there is at least one park with beautiful waterfalls and plenty of wildlife to enjoy. Pack some snacks for your trip and spend the day exploring! Even if you don’t live near a big city, that’s okay too! There are probably several small parks near you which have hiking trails through meadows filled with wildflowers, along rivers teeming with fish, and up mountains full of deer tracks.

3) Visit the zoo

Most major cities have a zoo. Even if you don’t live in a city, there are probably several small zoos located near you. Zoos are a great place to take the kids for an afternoon of fun and learning. Most zoos have exhibits with animals from all over the world, as well as educational programs and activities for children. Zoos aren’t just for kids! I’m sure there are plenty of adult-only activities at your local zoo, like wine tastings and concerts. Check out your local zoo’s website to see what’s happening this weekend!

4) Go Bowling

Bowling is a great way to spend an afternoon or evening with the family. Most bowling alleys have arcades and food courts, so you can make a night of it! Bowling is also a great activity for groups. Get your friends together with Motiv Bowling jerseys for some competition and laughs.

5) Go to the movies

Catch a flick! Many theaters have discounted matinees and family-oriented films. You can catch up on all of your favorite blockbusters or sit back with some popcorn for that feel good movie you’ve been dying to see. If going out to dinner is too costly, try making a fun meal at home before hitting the theater – but make sure everyone cleans their plates first!

6) Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way to spend time with your family while helping others. There are many opportunities for volunteers of all ages, so find something that interests you and your family. Animal shelters always need help walking dogs or cleaning cages, soup kitchens always need people to serve food, and children’s hospitals always need people to read stories to the kids. Find an organization near you and get started!

There are plenty of other things you can do in your own backyard with your family. These are just a few suggestions to get you started.
