As the cold weather fades and spring is finally here, it’s time to get out of your living room and back outside again. After what seems like an eternity spent indoors, we can’t wait to get back into the sunshine. If you’re like us and going a little stir crazy inside, we’ve got 6 easy ways to incorporate more fresh air into your day to day routine.
Change Up Your Commute
If you’re a busy guy, it can feel difficult to work outside time into your schedule. If this is your problem, try to mix up your commute by walking or riding a bike to work. The early morning exercise will help energize you for work, and you’ll get some sweet Vitamin D along the way. If your commute is too long, work a walk into your lunch break or weekly errands, or bike to meet your buddies at happy hour. Even a few minutes outside here and there will add up, making you happier in the long run.
Reconnect With Nature
We’ve said it before, men need to spend time in the wild to feel sane. If you haven’t taken the time to get out in nature in a while, it may be time to change that. Use that PTO you’ve been saving up and plan a trip to hike or camp somewhere away from the city. Time in the great outdoors means less screens, less stress, and a chance to sleep under the stars. Be careful, though—if you spend too long out there, you probably won’t ever want to get back to real life.
Get An Outdoor Hobby
If you find yourself consistently getting bored in your free time, you might need a new hobby. Why not kill two birds with one stone, and find yourself something to keep you entertained and get you out of the house. Many cities have intramural leagues for sports like baseball or soccer, where you’d be able to make some new friends, work out, and have fun all at the same time. For the more solitary guys, we suggest trying out golf or rock climbing. Both provide the same physical benefits and outside time, with none of the small talk.
Plan Family Time In The Sun
As a family man, you want to inspire your kids to love the outdoors like you do. So start them off early, by planning family activities that get you active and outside. It can be as simple as playing catch in the backyard or planning a day at the beach. Just deck your little dudes out in their favorite boys sun hats and sandals and make some father-son memories together.
Adopt A New Furry Friend
While it definitely isn’t for everyone, adopting one of man’s best friends is a great way to work some more outside time into your day. A dog is basically an energetic, living reminder to walk around a few times a day. If you’re a runner, invest in a sports harness so you can take your new buddy out with you on the trail. Alternatively, check out your local dog park and spark up a conversation with a cute fellow dog owner while you’re at it.
Set Up An Outdoor Office
Working from home gives you the flexibility to pick your own workspace, so why tie yourself down to a desk? This is what patios were made for. Charge up your computer and phone ahead of time, and then take that meeting out in the sunshine. All you need is wi-fi and you’re good to go.
Getting outdoors on a regular basis doesn’t have to be strenuous or difficult. Whether you go on a bike ride or simply walk your dog, you’ll still be getting that healthy dose of fresh air and sunshine!
