WASPcam 9907 (4K) Action Camera: The Review

WASPcam, 4K, action camera, tech, gadget, review, product review

As a techie who loves to travel, I have always wanted to try out an action camera to experience what the hype was all about. Ever since a buddy of mine brought his action camera with him on a trip we took to a PA waterpark, it has been on my bucket list. Recently I recieved the WASPcam 9907 just in time for my vacation visiting family in Croatia and I look forward to using it on my Sandals Barbados trip as well. (Video of those trips to follow on our YouTube channel) Please subscribe now so you don’t miss them.

I have to say right out of the box, I had mixed feelings as it was nice to see the many different mounts that they provide and I did love the size and look of the camera. It is very compact despite the bulkier weatherproofing. On the negative, the instruction manual needs work and I did have a hard time getting the camera to place the memory card and battery inside. The clasp was not easy, and darn near impossible to open and close. Once the battery and memory card are in, there is really no reason to go back. You won’t have to remove it often, since the camera charges while closed, and offers access to the MP4 video files via USB connection to the computer. The plug for the USB is under a screw in cap, which presents no problems and also has a foam insert to help with the lense fogging up.

In my opinion, the menu system is not difficult to understand, but the small weather resistant buttons are hard to push. It took a lot of effort to select items. You can use the smartphone to change some of these settings, which is nice, although you will not be able to view the footage live while shooting in 4K (only in 1080p and 720p modes). I also wish you were able to connect a stereo microphone to the camera for better audio quality. That said, it’s a fantastic little cam once you get past the poor instructions and ease of changing settings from the camera itself. It does shoot some genuine 4k video and takes very nice stills — the optics end of the device are fantastic given the arena. It really comes down to HOW you’re going to use your own action cam. This is a great option. Truly, you’re not going to go wrong either way, and that in of itself is a positive testament to what Cobra has produced here given GoPro’s place in the market.

Tech Specs:
The WASPcam 9907 records High-Definition video @ 4K/24fps, 1440p/30fps, 1080p/60fps, 1080p/30fps, 720p/120fps, 720p/60fps, and VGA/240fps with a 170° Wide viewing angle in .mp4 format with up to 20-Megapixel photo quality in .jpeg format. IT has 4x digital zoom and Auto / Daylight / Cloudy / Tungsten / Fluorescent / Underwater white balance modes. It’s built-in WiFi (802.11b/g/n) allows you to connect your camera to a smartphone for live viewing, remote control and instant sharing online. Like most action cameras these days, it is waterproof. You can go up to 98 feet under water without a case.

Below is a video of my first vacation that I took the WASPcam on. See what you think when if comes to the quality.
