Supercharge Your Morning Commute

Have you ever wondered how much time you spend traveling to and from work each year? If your commute takes an hour a day, over the course of a year, this equates to around ten days, depending on vacation time. Ten full days spent traveling! Imagine what you could do with that time? Rather than wasting it, sitting and idly daydreaming, make the most of your commute to improve your body and mind.

Get On Your Bike

Rather than taking the train or bus, jump on your bike instead. Hybrid bicycles will take you from the street to off road with the minimum of fuss. Think how many extra workout hours you’d clock up if you cycle full or part way to work each day.

If cycling isn’t really your thing, go for something a little gentler. Walk or power walk your way to work. Again, it makes a good workout and that wasted time could be spent getting fitter and stronger. Record your progress on your smartwatch or Fitbit.

Take A Lecture

If you took a course for ten full days, imagine what you’d learn. It’s possible to utilize your traveling time and listen to some lectures. The Great Courses is a series of lectures on a wide variety of subjects. You can choose from art, science, maths, philosophy or whatever takes your fancy. You can boost your knowledge and occupy your time all at the same time.

Increase Productivity

If you take the train or bus each day and spend a considerable amount of time sitting, you use this time productively. Get a start on your working day before you arrive at the office. Most of the following can be completed from the comfort of your cell phone.

  • Answer emails and clear your inbox
  • Create a to-do list for the day
  • Catch up on industry news
  • Check in on your social media sites

Read A Book

Catch up on all those business books you’ve been meaning to read. Or, make a dent in your novels list. You don’t even have to physically read them. Apps like Audible allow you to download audiobooks straight to your phone. So you can listen while you’re on the go.

Listen To A Podcast

Traveling can be boring, especially if you’re sat on a train or bus for an extended period of time. Load your phone with podcasts before you leave the house. You can learn something new, keep up-to-date with current affairs, stay ahead of your competitors, or just have a laugh. The journey will pass in no time at all.

Practice Mindfulness

Being present in the moment or being mindful helps decrease anxiety and depression. In a frantic world, we often stop noticing what is going on around us. This includes the sights, sounds, and smells of everyday life. Focusing on these things can help clear our minds and focus us, increasing productivity and promoting well-being. It can be practiced anywhere.

If you’re wasting your commute each day, think of ways you could use the time more wisely. By the end of the year you could be fitter, healthier, and more knowledgeable.
