Homeboy Security Camera: A Thorough Review

The newer generation of security cameras isn’t only smarter, but also a lot more convenient to have at home. They are easy to install, portable and can even work as a stand-alone security system.

Homeboy security camera is one of the most recent ones to hit the market and it’s been surrounded by a lot of buzzes since its release. In case you’re wondering, here are some of the reasons why.

Pros
IFTTT integration – IFTTT is a web-based service that allows you to create recipes for automation. Integrating Homeboy to IFTTT gives you the opportunity to link the WI-Fi security camera to other smart devices at home. One good example is setting up the camera to change the color of your smart lights once it’s time to recharge its batteries. You can even use it to create online storage accounts or set up all your notifications to be sent directly to your email. Homeboy’s IFTTT channel is one of the things that set it apart from its competitors.

Wireless connection – Since it doesn’t need wires, other than the time you need to recharge it, Homeboy is a lot easier to set up at home. You can install it in high areas without having to worry about not having any nearby electrical outlet.

Easy installation – You don’t need a lot of technical skills in setting up Homeboy. In fact, there’s no screw or drilling required. You simply need to install its sticky magnetic base either on your wall or a counter. This magnetic base makes positioning the camera in different angles a lot easier. It’s transferrable, too.

Homeboy’s design is also unobtrusive. At first glance, it looks like a white ball with a shiny metallic base. It’s relatively the size of a golf ball which makes it easy to blend with your home’s interior without giving away its purpose.

Battery life – Homeboy’s battery can last up to 3 months on a single charge. That means you only have to charge it around 4 times a year through its micro USB port. It utilizes low-power Wi-Fi so it doesn’t drain its battery as fast as other cameras do.

Flexible Monitoring Plans – There are three ways you can monitor your Homeboy. You have the option to check it out by yourself while you’re away from home. Another option is to invite a couple of your friends and family members to your social network and start a virtual watch program. In case you want extra protection, you can subscribe to Homeboy’s professional monitoring plan. It’s flexible and comes with no binding contract.

Cons
Camera
– Using its built-in light, this security camera can monitor your property at night. However, despite its night vision feature, the camera may still not be effective in identifying burglars because of its low 640 x 480 video resolution. Aside from this, there’s also no option for live streaming.

Two-way talk feature – Even though it has a speaker for its siren and a microphone for noise detection, there’s no option to use the camera for communication. Its lack of two-way talk feature isn’t a great deal but it’s something you’d wish the device has especially if you have kids or pets at home.

Conclusion
Considering its price and features, Homeboy is already a good deal for a security camera. If you can live with its lack of live streaming and two-way talk feature, the camera can be enough to protect your home. However, if you are looking for something more comprehensive, it’s better if you can read security camera reviews first. There are a wide range of surveillance cameras available today that have all of Homeboy’s features and more.
