Shaving in a guys life is one of those life long epic rituals that every guy must go through. Some may start shaving sooner than others but it is an inevitable journey that every male will take in their lives and like any journey there are bumps in the road. I would like to share what I have learned in my many years of shaving help minimize the bumps. The art of shaving can have numerous negative side effects including cuts, abrasions, and irritation. Many side effects can be minimized by following some very simple rules. Even I forget some times to apply these when in a rush during this ritual.

A fresh blade, applying plenty of lubrication, and avoiding pressing down with the razor are definitely ways to ease the pain. A shaving brush can also help. When I am ready to shave, I find it best to do this fresh out of the shower. The hot water and steam help to loosen up the hairs on my face (and my head). After getting out of the shower and ready to shave I get my shaving cream, shaving brush and cup creating a nice lather. Once I have a nice thick lather I turn on the hot water in the sink and give my face a quick splash of water.

Now I am ready. Take the brush with the shaving cream (don’t ever use soap as it will dry out your skin) and start to apply it to your face while letting the brush lightly exfoliate the skin. Remember not to use too much shaving cream as it will most likely clog the blades in your razor. I use the Schick Hydro® and the Schick Hydro® 5 Groomer if I let my beard get a little too long as well as on my mustache. If I have time, I like to do 3 passes with the razor lathering in between each pass. The first pass is a downward motion across the whole face starting from the upper side burns. I have the tendency to start from the left side. This is usually done in short strokes no more than an inch between rinsing. Short strokes helps to prevent irritation. The second pass would be left to right or right to left depending on which side of your face you are doing and the third pass going in an upward motion. Each pass, feel free to increase the strokes slightly. You be the judge on how far you can go. Especially when your hairs grow in many different directions, this 3 pass method comes in handy.

When done, make sure to rinse off all of your shaving gear and dry it well. Drying your razor after use will help extend the life of each blade.
