Mets Recall Wilmer Flores/Option Kirk Niewenhuis
The New York Mets today announced the club has recalled infielder Wilmer Flores from Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League and optioned outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis to Las Vegas. Flores will wear #4 and was available for last tonight’s game in Milwaukee. He went 1 for 3 in the Mets 9-1 loss. The Mets are 48-54 on the season and 8.5 games out if first place.
Flores, 22, was also with the Mets from May 8-June 25 and from April 2-6 earlier this year. He hit .225 (18-80) with three doubles, one home run and seven RBI in 25 games with New York this year. Flores was hitting .323 (71-220) with 43 runs scored, 11 doubles, 13 home runs, including one last night and 57 RBI in 55 games for Las Vegas (AAA). Flores hit in 22 straight games from June 27-July 21 for the 51s.
Nieuwenhuis, 26, was hitting .246 (14-57) with two home runs and 11 RBI in 30 games with the Mets.
FANTASY TIP: Flores and his power could see deep-mixed value with regular playing time, but the flaws in his plate discipline will suppress his upside.
